The Only Thing I Can Upgrade is Strength chapter 125

After swallowing the vaguely familiar looking contents of the bottle, I didn’t exactly lose consciousness, but everything swirled around me and I couldn’t even comprehend what was going on. Even though I didn’t even have the Strength to stand up, I felt myself weakening even more if that was possible. I couldn’t even do anything as I felt all my armor being removed, then I was wrapped in warm fuzzy darkness.

The bumps and discomfort were me being carried up stairs, I think. I wasn’t really processing time very well, and just felt like I wanted to throw up… but didn’t even have the power to do that.

There was more walking, more darkness, and then I felt myself falling. Fortunately, the warm fuzzy darkness around me padded my fall… so that I only felt bruised all over but nothing felt broken. The dizziness gradually cleared up, though I wasn’t sure how long it was. I realized that I probably had to move, to do something. Unfortunately, I was still wrapped up in the… thing around me. It made it rather hard to breathe.

However, I could think now. I couldn’t move. I felt weak but… not in the same was as I had after I had last been poisoned by ten steps deathroot. I was pretty sure it was the same feeling, but it felt like it had left my system much faster. Maybe it was a small dose, or because it directly went into my bloodstream instead of being inhaled or… whatever. I even had some mana left, and gingerly used the tiniest amount to try to see if the mana dispersal powder was still functioning. That, too, seemed fine. As for what I did with the mana… it was the tiniest practical thing I could think of. Opening my status window.

When I had last been poisoned by the ten steps deathroot, my status window had shown the loss in Strength. I wanted to see how low I was right now, and the results were… surprising. I wasn’t even really sure how to comprehend them at first.

It was no wonder I felt weak… my Strength being almost 400 points less. Yet… wasn’t 436 still pretty strong? I flexed my muscles. It was certainly hard to move confined as I was… but I did still have Strength. However, the loss of Strength wasn’t even the most disturbing part. It was pretty bad, sure, but it was a consequence of the bigger problem of suddenly having some of my levels. It made sense that of course bonus points in Strength went away. Likewise, I had lost my class. I was confused at that for a moment, and at the numbers not adding up. After all, at level 10 I should have still had 200 bonus points in Strength and my class.

But I wasn’t level 10. I was level -10. Put another way, all of my bonus points had been taken away from me… including the 100 points from being an otherworlder. Since I got 10 points per level, naturally I was level -10. That concoction must have been a deleveling potion. I’d have assumed they would actually target levels instead of bonus attribute points- but maybe otherworlders had never taken a deleveling potion before.

Could levels even be negative? How did that even work? It didn’t make any sense… except mathematically, everything was fine. However, physically I was not fine at all.

I was still wrapped up in… something. That something was tied with ropes, maybe. I was still going to die. Even if I didn’t starve or die of thirst… I suspected something worse would happen before then. I had only been a single step from rescuing Kantrilla too, and everything failed. I couldn’t do anything about it, just like the first time. It was just so frustrating and I couldn’t save her and I hated it. I hated everything. The stupid world for letting people like them exist. Timmy for not just coming to smash this guy’s head in even though he knew he was bad business. Myself, for not being able to do anything about it. I couldn’t even move no matter how hard I struggled and I… I wasn’t going to give up so easily.

I couldn’t move… but I WOULD MOVE. I shouted at the world in anger and struggled as hard as I could. I even prayed to whatever gods there were in this world- I wasn’t even sure there were any, clerics notwithstanding. Then I heard a snap. That was it then. Now I had a broken arm or something and… it didn’t hurt. Well, okay, it hurt just a little bit, but not broken bone level of hurting. I was sweating and it was gross and terrible and I just wanted to be able to move about… and suddenly everything loosened up.

What had snapped was the ropes holding the whole package together. Once I climbed out I saw… nothing. Of course. It was dark. I used Light, and saw a rug. A rug. They did the rug thing. I hoped it was an expensive rug and they would miss it. Beyond the rug and rope, I saw nothing. However, it was what I didn’t see that let me know where I was. I was in a dungeon. That was why I couldn’t see the walls or floor. I tried expanding the light into little separate points the way I’d seen it done by others. Maybe I could get a better picture of how things were. It had never worked before… but it did. At least, enough that I got the general idea of where the corridor I was in went… and the hole in the ceiling above me. That was where they had dropped me in, which meant I was at least on the second level of the dungeon. Unfortunately I couldn’t climb the walls. Or could I? I guessed I would find out… after I fought the shambling suit of armor moving toward me.
