The Only Thing I Can Upgrade is Strength chapter 12

In the morning I looked at my stats again, just to make sure. My Strength still had a base of 29. The ridiculous growth from the previous day hadn’t been a lie. That meant I hadn’t ruined myself by accidentally only being able to upgrade Strength. As long as it could grow to a reasonable level, my bonus points would actually mean something, instead of just making up for a deficiency. Those and the bonus ten percent would hopefully make up for my deficiencies in other areas.

I could feel the increase in Strength from the day before. My base had increased by 17, and I had leveled up… which was another 10 points. It was basically three levels, which was a crazy amount to think about, especially over a single day.

The most noticeable effect was that my darkwood club felt lighter. I could almost wield it in one hand… but that was not how I had practiced with it, so it wouldn’t actually do me much good to do so. Besides, the grip was large enough it was obviously not intended for that. Actually… upon looking at it more closely, perhaps it was intended to be used in one or two hands. It was just that mine were small, like the rest of me, so it was really only balanced properly if I used two hands. Besides, what would I do with my other hand anyway? I didn’t have a shield. I thought about getting one. That could be good, but of course I had to be able to use this club properly one hand first.

I thought about my increased base Strength, and looked down at my arms. Maybe they were bigger than before? They still looked pathetic, but it seemed there was maybe a bit more to them. I hadn’t spent that long staring at my arms, because it made me feel bad, so I couldn’t be completely sure. My fingers could still completely fit around my wrist… and my bicep.

Eventually, I had to start my day. That meant hunting horned rabbits. I went out in a different direction than previous days, because there would be more near town. Though there were always some no matter where I went, it was better to go somewhere new to find more in less time.

With my increased Strength, I noticed fighting them was much easier. Not that I hadn’t killed them in one hit before, but now my swing speed was faster… and more accurate. My Strength had actually been holding me back a bit. It just wasn’t easily to realize. I could even sometimes follow through and hit a second rabbit… though that often threw me off balance. It was best to practice such wide swings somewhere safe.

That thought made me realize I hadn’t really practiced the club. I knew how to use it to fight horned rabbits, but that was a very specific skillset. I couldn’t fight something bigger like a wolf, or a human. There had been the bandits, but they had been surprised… and basically just big targets. I didn’t really want to fight other humans, but maybe I would have to at some point. Or… maybe goblins or orcs or something. I was in a fantasy world, so I thought something like them should exist.

My stats were decently improved by evening, but my Strength had grown less. That was actually… a relief. After all, it should have just been approaching toward a normal Strength, since it was previous… not.

Looking at it, 14 points was still a lot. That was still more than a level. Nothing else increased. I doubted I used any of the mental stats, and had no idea how to train Luck, but the other physical stats also didn’t increase. Well, they were already much higher. I didn’t let myself get hit, either, so Toughness wouldn’t increase. Constitution was like… Stamina, so unless I exhausted myself it wouldn’t increase much. That wasn’t a good thing to do out in the field fighting things with sharp horns.

I also gained Dodging Mastery… which was exactly what it sounded like. I thought my body had felt lighter due to the Strength increase, but perhaps this was part of it as well.

The third evening after my Muscular Dystrophy was cured, I took the rabbits into the guild for the bounty, as normal. My haul didn’t increase much, because I was still limited by what I could find and what would fit in a large sack, but it was a sustainable lifestyle… if barely. I checked the healer’s area, but Kantrilla and Father Thomas still weren’t there. There were other healers, but I didn’t need healing… I just wanted to thank them again. I felt that even more now that I was more sure I was cured, instead of just caught up in the emotion of the moment, and the first time I had seen magic.

As I went to exit the guild I was stopped by a hulking figure. Sgar and I had exchanged pleasantries a few times, but not much more than that, after his initial advice. “Hi there, Sgar.”

He nodded. “Good to see you, Llyr. I see you have grown a lot stronger lately. Did you level up?” I nodded. I had indeed leveled… once. Sgar smiled, “That’s great. It’s always a good feeling.” Sgar leaned over me, inspecting me. I didn’t really like people towering over me, but he wasn’t doing it on purpose… in fact I suspected he made everyone feel the same. Finally, he moved back a little bit. “Can I see you swing that club again?”

“Sure.” I swung my club a few times. I liked the sound it made as it moved through the air.

Sgar frowned, “You’re… definitely much stronger. Though, I have to say… you can’t focus on just Strength.” I wanted to reply that I actually couldn’t do anything else, at this point. However, he continued shortly, “You have to have technique. It doesn’t look like anyone actually taught you how to use that thing. Am I right?”

I grinned sheepishly. “Ah… I’m basically self taught… and I’ve only fought horned rabbits.”

Sgar nodded. “That’s what I thought. It’s a good thing I caught it early, otherwise you could grow up to be a useless adventurer. Well, probably not, but it would take longer to fix your bad habits later. Come, I’m going to teach you how to really use weapons.” It wasn’t a suggestion. He grabbed my arm… not roughly, but firmly. I wasn’t ready, and thus he pulled me along. I even tried resisting for a moment, but he barely even seemed to notice. I realized that, though I felt strong… this was a world with many strong people, and not just in the meaning of Strength… though it was obvious Sgar significantly outclassed me there. I wondered what level he was… and what he could teach me.
